Guardian Homes
Supporting the Next Generation of Service Dogs
Provide a stable, caring home for a Liberty Dogs™ breeding candidate, and become an essential part of our mission to raise future Service Dogs for U.S. Veterans.
Some volunteer opportunities impact a moment in time. This one spans across generations. As a Liberty Dogs Guardian Home, you’ll have a carefully selected breeding candidate in your home. These dogs play an important role in developing future Service Dogs for Veterans, and your family will provide the daily stability that helps them thrive. When their breeding career is complete, you’ll have the opportunity to welcome the dog into your family for good.
What to Expect
A Multi-Year Commitment, A Lifetime of Impact
Guardian Homes are a meaningful, long-term commitment. Female dogs are typically in the program up to 4 years, and males up to 7.
Liberty Dogs retains ownership of the dog during this time, taking care of all costs, so you can focus on giving them a loving home.

Volunteer Story
“As a Guardian Home dog, Oakley has given me purpose, companionship, and motivation to get out of the house even on difficult days. She has helped pull me out of isolation, brought consistency and joy into my daily routine, and reminded me how powerful the bond between a human and a dog can truly be. Being part of the breeding program also gives me pride knowing the impact Oakley will one day have on the Veterans we serve.”

Frequently Asked Questions
-
What’s the time commitment?
Guardian Homes are a meaningful long-term commitment. Females typically remain in the program for up to 4 years and males for up to 7 years.
-
Can I have other pets in my home?
Absolutely! We ask that they’re well-socialized, have all health records up to date, and are spayed or neutered if they’re the opposite sex.
-
Can I host a dog if I work full-time outside of the home?
Yes. These dogs are older and accustomed to quiet crate time during the day, making them a good fit for working households if you can’t take them with you.
-
Can I choose the dog’s sex or breed?
Yes, you may make a special request for a specific sex and breed, though it may take a little longer to fulfill. Please note that females enter their heat cycle approximately every six months.
-
What are the exercise and outdoor requirements for a Guardian Home?
Though a fenced yard is not a requirement for a Guardian Home, leashed potty breaks are required outside of fully enclosed areas. Leashed walks and playtime in securely fenced spaces are encouraged, too.
-
What if I have to travel or there’s an unexpected emergency?
We’ve got you covered! Dogs can stay at the Liberty Dogs facility while you’re gone to ensure consistent, high-quality care.
-
Will I be able to take my dog out in public?
Yes. Guardian Homes serve as ambassadors for Liberty Dogs, helping build awareness and support within their communities.
