RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – Liberty Dogs is a program aimed at serving veterans with disabilities across the United States, with a special emphasis on local Nevada veterans. These services are free to veterans, and while the campus is still being completed in south Reno, they began training before their 2026 opening date.

Once the campus is complete, veterans will have the opportunity to be paired with a service dog. Liberty Dogs will begin accepting applications for psychiatric and physical mobile service dogs starting, November 11, 2025.

Some of these Labrador and Golden Retriever puppies are being trained by inmates at the Northern Nevada Correctional Facility in Carson to help them prepare for their service

Puppies arrive when they are about 2 months old and are kept in this primary training until they are one year old and then move on to more advanced training with a veteran to tailor their training to the specific needs of the person.

Liberty Dogs is looking to expand this program to other prisons in the area as well. The public can also participate and help raise a puppy.
