Liberty Dogs hosted its inaugural Leash Passing Ceremony on Friday, Aug. 21, to unite each veteran and shelter dog pairing joining the Liberty Dogs Veteran-Trained Service Dog Program.

Liberty Dogs is a national organization based in Reno that matches U.S. veterans living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with highly trained service dogs, offering science-backed, integrated wellness programs. As a flagship initiative of the Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation, the organization brings every part of the healing journey into one place built for independence and renewed purpose.

The Shelter Dog Program partners with shelters to identify adult dogs with the potential to become service dogs. Each dog then completes six weeks of foundational training with the Liberty Dogs team before being carefully matched with a veteran.

After the “leash is passed,” veterans and their dogs train together through weekly classes, one-on-one coaching and guided real-world practice, building the skills and bond needed to become a successful team.

“Today’s inaugural Leash Passing Ceremony marked a pivotal moment, not only for our organization, but for the veterans themselves,” said Maj. Gen. Ondra L. Berry (Ret.), Liberty Dogs CEO. “It’s the beginning of their journey with their future service dog. Over the next several months, our veterans and their dogs will work side by side attending weekly classes, receiving one-on-one coaching and practicing together in real-world settings. This partnership begins by saving a dog’s life and continues as the veteran and service dog support each other’s growth.”

The inaugural graduating class is:

  • Kary Cluck and Pebbles
  • Dharma Klock and Daisy
  • Myrom Bursell and Aria
  • Christian McDuffie and Lady
  • Cullen Knight and Rider

Each placement is carefully considered and determined based on the dog’s temperament, the veteran’s lifestyle and their individual needs. Liberty Dogs provides all veterinary care, food and essential equipment at no cost to the veteran.
