Veteran-Trained Service Dog Program

From Shelter to Hero

Reno/Tahoe Veterans living with PTSD are matched with carefully selected shelter dogs and actively train them into Service Dogs alongside our expert team.

We believe that, given a second chance and provided proper training, shelter dogs can become outstanding Service Dogs. This partnership begins by saving a dog’s life and continues as the Veteran and Service Dog support each other’s growth.

The Journey Ahead

Trained Together, Every Step of the Way

Both start a new chapter, and neither does it alone. Each dog completes six weeks of foundational training with our team before being carefully matched to a Veteran. From there, our staff guides them through the nine-month journey, from task development and progress evaluations to real-world practice, so both Veteran and dog are set up to succeed.

Program Highlights

  • A Match Made With Care

We take every placement seriously. They are based on the dog’s temperament, the Veteran’s lifestyle, and their individual needs.

  • Fast-Track to Training

Once an application is approved, training will begin (subject to dog availability and suitability). The program averages nine months of training before graduation.

  • All Costs Covered

Liberty Dogs provides all veterinary care and essential equipment, such as food, at no cost to the Veteran.
